Buying property in Bulgaria is currently hugely popular. This is because properties are relatively inexpensive and transport links to/from the UK are getting better and cheaper. Bulgaria offers superb beach holiday facilities with a great summer climate, good quality winter ski resorts and great culture, architecture and history. Actually, it has a Mediterranean feel even though its on the eastern part of the Balkan peninsula. Buying property in Bulgaria is a good move at the moment as it becomes a full member of the EU in 2007, which is likely to push Bulgaria property prices much higher and also, the EU is investing millions of pounds for infrastructure improvements. Bulgaria is about the size of England but its population is considerably less, around 8 million. Larger scale development has only recently taken place and rural tranquillity can still be found. It has the mass-market appeal which other countries had previously, being about 3 hours flying time away, hot summers, a great coastline, low cost of living and low property prices. Buying Property in Bulgaria - Any Drawbacks?
Most purchases are made of the coast of the Black Sea, but this coastline is not that long compared with the size of the country. Therefore, this is likely to result in over-crowding and over-inflated prices along this strip. The Bulgarian language is Slavonic and difficult for English speakers to quickly pick up. Also, flights to Bulgaria are not that cheap but the arrival of low-cost airlines in the future would change this. In the past, Bulgarian economic problems have held back the country and although foreign buyers are generally welcomed, some resent this activity as some house prices are already out of reach for average earners and foreign investors can only make their situation worse. Some properties are the product of the communist era and are not aesthetically pleasing or of good quality, so be sure a of good survey if looking to buy one of these, or bear this in mind if your are looking to buy a property near such a building. |
